Muslim affairs adviser to US President Barack Obama to deliver lecture
The American University of Sharjah will host a Muslim affairs adviser to US President Barack Obama at a three-day exhibition and lecture series on religious co-existence starting today, January 11, 2011.
The event titled ‘Co-existence between Muslims and Non-Muslims since the dawn of Islam’ will focus on relations between Muslim and non-Muslim communities through history. Sayyed Ali Al Hashimi, Adviser to the President for Judiciary and Religious Affairs at Ministry of Presidential Affairs, will deliver a lecture on ‘Islam’s tolerance towards other religions’.
The Cultural Events Committee of American University of Sharjah has a history of hosting events of cultural interest for the university community and the public at large. AUS is home to a community of more than 5,000 students, faculty and staff in a distinguished architectural setting.
These events are either free of charge or heavily subsidized by the university. Past events have mainly focused on staged musical performances. The committee now aims to cover a broader, multicultural spectrum, including, but not limited to, music; theater; film; dance; lectures; and multimedia presentations.
On Thursday, Dalia Mogahed, Obama’s adviser for Muslim affairs, will speak on ‘Measuring the state of Muslim-West relations, assessing the new beginning’. Muslim preacher Dr. Shaikh Samir Mattar will also deliver a lecture on ‘Islamic principles and treatment of non-Muslims’.
